The problem
Sash windows painted badly fail quickly. And replacement is expensive.
Period timber sash windows in Victorian and Edwardian properties are expensive to replace — if the originals can even be replaced in a conservation area. Proper maintenance and painting is the cost-effective alternative. Done badly, paint peels, moisture gets in, and the timber deteriorates.
Preparation is everything. Old paint needs to be back to bare timber or stable base. Knots treated. Primer applied. The right paint system — flexible enough for timber movement — applied in the right conditions.
The Hancock approach
Strip back to sound paint. Prime. Apply the right system.
We strip back failed paint by hand or with a heat gun — never a disc sander that damages profiles. Knot treatment on any exposed timber. Primer coat, undercoat, two finish coats minimum. We use flexible oil-based or hybrid systems appropriate for timber movement.
We work across Windsor, Gerrards Cross, Pinner, Hatch End, and Northwood — areas with the highest concentration of period properties in the service corridor.
