The Best Time of Year to Paint or Render Your Home's Exterior

9 June 2026 · Hancock Plastering & Painting

Exterior work lives and dies by the weather. Render and masonry paint both need dry, mild conditions to cure and bond properly — get the timing wrong and you’ll be redoing it sooner than you’d like.

The sweet spot: late spring to early autumn

In the UK, the best window for exterior painting and rendering runs from roughly April to September. You’re after:

  • Daytime temperatures above 8–10°C (and ideally not above the high 20s)
  • Dry weather for several days before and after — surfaces must be dry going on, and the coating needs time to cure before rain
  • Lower humidity and longer daylight hours

Why winter is risky

Cold, damp and frost are the enemies of exterior finishes:

  • Frost can freeze water in fresh render, cracking it before it sets
  • Damp surfaces stop paint and render bonding, leading to peeling and blowing
  • Coatings cure far more slowly in the cold, leaving them vulnerable for longer

That doesn’t mean nothing can happen over winter — preparation, repairs and sheltered areas can often be tackled — but the main coating work is best saved for milder months.

Plan ahead — good trades get booked up

Because the season is limited, the warmer months are the busiest for exterior work. If you want your house rendered or painted next summer, it pays to get a quote in and a date booked early rather than leaving it to the last sunny week.

We’ll work around the forecast

We plan exterior jobs around the weather to give your home the best, longest-lasting finish — whether that’s fresh render, masonry paint, or repainting fascias and woodwork. Based in Harefield, covering Middlesex and the Home Counties.
