Rendering

External render for Middlesex and Home Counties properties. Sand and cement, monocouche, pebble dash.

The problem

Failing render isn't just cosmetic.

External render that's cracking, delaminating, or blown in places isn't just an eyesore. Moisture is getting in behind it. Left long enough, it reaches the masonry and the internal plaster. The repair cost compounds.

Most failed render fails because the substrate wasn't prepared properly, the mix wasn't right for the wall type, or it was applied in the wrong conditions. Those aren't mistakes we make.

The Hancock approach

Substrate first. Render second.

We assess the wall before specifying the system. Sand and cement render is the workhorse — appropriate for most solid brick and blockwork. Monocouche is single-coat, fast, and good for new build or where colour-through finish is needed. Pebble dash is the right call for properties where it's the original finish.

Method

How a rendering job runs.

01

Substrate assessment

Check wall type, existing render condition, damp, and any structural movement. This determines the system.

02

Preparation

Remove failed render, clean the substrate, apply bonding agent or scratch key as required for the system specified.

03

Scratch coat

First coat applied and keyed before setting. The scratch coat is what the finish coat bonds to — this stage determines longevity.

04

Finish coat

Sand and cement, monocouche, or pebble dash applied and finished to specification. Clean, consistent, and properly cured.

FAQs

Rendering — frequently asked questions

Straight answers about our plastering and painting work across Middlesex and the Home Counties. Still unsure? Call 07734 903439.

What types of rendering do you offer?
We apply sand and cement render, monocouche (through-coloured) render and traditional pebble dash to homes across Middlesex and the Home Counties, matching the finish to your property.
How much does rendering a house cost?
Rendering is priced per project at a fixed rate agreed up front, based on wall area, render type and access. Call 07734 903439 for a free site visit and quote.
How long does exterior render take to cure?
Render needs to cure gradually — typically several days before painting, and longer in cold or wet weather. We schedule work around the forecast for the best result.
Can rendering help with damp or insulation?
Modern renders shed water far better than old, cracked finishes and can be combined with external wall insulation systems. We will advise what suits your home.
Do you remove old, blown render first?
Yes — we hack off loose or blown render, prepare the substrate properly and re-render, rather than patching over failing material.
