When walls look tired, cracked or uneven, the fix is one of two jobs: a skim coat or a full re-plaster. They cost different amounts and take different lengths of time, so it helps to know which yours needs before you ask for a quote.
What is skimming?
Skimming applies a thin finishing layer — usually 2–3mm — over an existing surface that’s still sound. It flattens minor imperfections, covers fine cracks and leaves walls smooth and ready to decorate. It’s the right choice when the wall underneath is solid and well-attached, just scuffed, patchy or slightly uneven.
Common skimming jobs:
- Smoothing over old textured or Artex finishes
- Tidying walls after wallpaper removal
- Refreshing surfaces before a repaint
What is re-plastering?
A full re-plaster removes failed plaster back to the brick or block, then builds the wall back up with backing (“floating”) coats before the finishing skim. It’s needed when the existing plaster has come away from the wall.
You probably need re-plastering if:
- Plaster sounds hollow when you tap it (it’s “blown” — no longer bonded)
- There are large, deep or spreading cracks
- Sections are crumbling, bulging or damp-damaged
- The wall is significantly out of true
A quick test you can do
Gently tap across the wall with your knuckles. A solid, dull sound means the plaster is still bonded and can likely be skimmed. A hollow, drum-like sound means it’s blown and needs hacking off and re-plastering.
Still not sure?
You don’t have to diagnose it yourself. We’ll come and assess the walls, tell you honestly whether a skim will do or a re-plaster is the smarter long-term fix, and quote a fixed price either way.
