What floating is
Floating builds up the base before the skim goes on.
Floating coat — sometimes called browning coat or bonding coat — is applied to uneven, hollow, or thick-depth walls before skimming. It brings the wall back to a consistent plane, fills depressions, and builds up thickness where the substrate is low.
If the floating is rushed, uneven, or not adequately dried out before skimming, the skim fails. It's one of the most common reasons plaster jobs don't hold long-term — particularly on older properties where walls are out of true.
Hancock carry out floating as a standalone service or as part of a full replastering package. We don't skim over floating that isn't ready.
